FIFTY SHADES OF BLUE | PORTO SANTO (Guest Series: 07)

Porto Santo, the island where the sea has fifty shades of blue.
Last year I went on a 7-day vacation to Porto Santo, a small Portuguese island right in the Atlantic Ocean and I will share with you some details about this little paradise.

To get there, you can either take a flight from Lisbon (it takes 1h 45 mins) or you can take a 2h 30 mins boat from Funchal (Madeira). When you arrive in Porto Santo, you can walk to your destination or take a taxi and they will drive you anywhere in the island.
In terms of accommodation, there are a few options depending on the type of holidays you want: you can choose to stay in a hotel, Airbnb or even camping.
Porto Santo or the “Golden Island” is well known for the 9km-long beach of fine and silky sand and turquoise waters. The beach has also curative powers, which makes them highly beneficial for treating rheumatism and bone diseases.
Apart from that, the island has also some attractions and viewpoints and it is worth to spend some time visiting them.
The island’s capital “VilaBaleira” is definitely a must go.You can just relax in front of the sea or make some strolls around the palm trees and bougainvillea-lined streets. While here, you can try their famous ice creams “Lambecas” or the typical drink called “Poncha”, a sugar cane brandy and juice cocktail.
PortelaViewpoint, surrounded by windmills, offers a magnificent view over Porto Santo and its beach. On the west side of the island, we find “PicodaAnaFerreira”, an organ-pipe array of pentagonal rock columns, caused by volcanic activity and nearby we have “Zimbralinho”, a cozy cove with an amazing view.

To end the day you can stop at “Calheta”, on the southeast and order some fresh fish or seafood.

Our trip has come to an end and I really hope you enjoyed to discover more about this beautiful Portuguese destination.

THE JOURNEY | Danielle Paiva (Guest Series: 10)

“A man needs to travel. By his own, not through stories, pictures, books or TV. He needs to travel by himself, with his eyes and feet, to understand what is his. To one day plant his own trees and value them. Knowing the cold to enjoy the heat. And the opposite. Feel the distance and absence of shelter to be well under his own roof. A man needs to travel to places that he does not know to break this arrogance that makes us see the world as we imagine it, and not simply as it is or can be. That makes us teachers and doctors of what we have not seen, when we should be students, and simply go and see.” This text by Amyr Klink has always inspired me. I discovered my passion for travel (exploring places), languages (knowing how to communicate) and photography(recording moments) in 2005, when I did my first exchange program at the age of 17. In July I went with a group of young Brazilians to take a basic English course in Toronto, Canada. This group trip, which was guided, was organized an...
